Jim has been playing hand drums and percussion instruments since 1970, including two years in Africa where he was deeply moved by the power of group drumming to build community bonds, invigorate and focus people, release stress and enhance a spirit of celebration.
Jim plays Congas, Bongos, Timbales, Djembe, Ashikos, Shekere and other shakers, Udu, claves, bells & blocks, cymbals & gongs and percussion sound effects. Jim’s Current projects: - Leads interactive group drumming programs and motivational rhythm-based keynotes for corporations, conferences, communities, schools and private groups throughout U.S. and internationally through company, Hands-On! Drumming® Events.
- Teaches hand drum and hand percussion workshops, classes and residencies in schools, colleges, universities, music camps, music industry trade shows and community centers throughout North America and beyond.
- Leader of the percussion group, Celebration! Drummers, a three to ten piece performance ensemble (with or without dancers) that plays uplifting contemporary Caribbean and African inspired rhythms for corporate, community and private groups.
- Is the percussionist for The Bill Hopkins Rockin’ Orchestra, a 10 piece band that performs at corporate parties and resorts worldwide (“The best party band in the world!”- F. Duncan Reyes, Fairmont Hotels)
- Is the percussionist for Gospel/Soul singer Sista Monica Parker
- Is the percussionist for singer/songwriter Dave Stein
- Is an endorser/clinician for Latin Percussion Instruments, Sabian Cymbals & Gongs, ProMark Drumsticks, Gibraltar Drum Hardware and Audix Microphones
- Is the head of Latin Percussion’s Recreational & Community Drumming Program
- Is an active member of the Percussion Arts Society, an international organization that promotes percussion education, and has presented over twenty workshops at their prestigious International Conferences
- Writes and lectures about the physical, mental and emotional benefits of drumming for music, education, wellness and trade periodicals and groups.
